Slides from the GDC talk by No man’s sky developer

A lot of excitement has been generated about the talk by No man’s sky art director Grant Duncan at GDC 2015.

Here is the original description of the event:


No Man’s Sky is a strange beast: an infinite, procedural galaxy filled with endless alien worlds. Art Director Grant Duncan will talk about how a tiny indie team at Hello Games has gone about creating the artwork behind No Man’s Sky, from early concept to finalised art. Grant will talk about inspirations, pre-production and the complicated, rewarding (and sometimes messy) union between programmers and artists. Attendees will be presented with lots of pictures and a step-by-step walk-through of the No Man’s Sky art pipeline.


Attendees will leave with a thorough understanding of Hello Games’ procedural technology and their Blue Print system, an in-house tool used to create huge variety from a tiny amount of handmade art. Attendees will see a breakdown of the problems, the solutions, and how they embraced the chaos of procedural technology.

Intended Audience

This talk is intended for lovers of sci-fi artwork. It will benefit artists who are already working with procedural generation, artists interested in new ways of working, or anyone interested in seeing some of the tools, art and ideas behind No Man’s Sky’s development. There will be lots of pictures.
